There will be a FFA small engines practice today after school from 3:20 – 5:00 pm in room 150.

The MC FFA will hold their chapter meeting after school on January 23rd. We hope to see members there!

The Annual IPMG/Special Olympics basketball invitational has been rescheduled for this Sunday January 28th, from 10:30AM to 4PM, at Monroe Central High School. Special Olympics is looking for volunteers in various opportunities such as being a referee, score keeping, runners, clean up, concessions, etc. If you’re interested in volunteering, all day or half day, please see Mrs. Wines in room 144 or send a Schoology to sign up.

The Academic Team kicked the season off with a 5-way virtual meet against Winchester, Daleville, Randolph Southern, and Richmond here at Monroe Central on last Wednesday night (January 17). The Science team tied for second place alongside Daleville with Jayden Brown taking home a first place win in the individual competition. Our English team placed third in their category with Andriana Johnson and Ava Phelps both tying for 3rd place in the individual competition. Our next meet is on January 31 against Jay County, Centerville, Richmond, and Tri.

Volunteers are needed for the Archery State Qualifier!! The Archery State Qualifier is scheduled for Saturday, January 27th, at MCE. Thirteen teams have signed up so far – almost 300 archers! We need volunteers to enter scores into a spreadsheet after each flight. The first round of scores would need to be entered around 8:30 am, and the final round should be around 3:30 pm. If you are interested, please email annet@monroecentral.org

There will be a Sweetheart’s Dance on Saturday, February 10th from 7-9pm for students in grades 7-12. Cost is $8 per person or $15 per couple. Tickets will be sold at the door the night of the dance. Dance request forms for students who do not attend MC are due back by Wednesday, February 7th.

The MCCTA (Mrs. Van Pelt) is selling granola bars, 2 bars for $1.

The 6th and 7th grade girls basketball team faced off against the Selma Braves for 2 quarters of action last Thursday evening. The short handed Braves were forced to bring in reinforcements, eventually outscoring the Lady Bears 15-10. The Bears were led in scoring by Lucy Huston with 5. Claire Cheeseman made her first 3 pointer of the season and Izzy McGrath added 2. The Lady Bears travel to Blackford on Monday for their first of 3 games next week. Go Bears!

The 8th grade Lady Bears finished last Thursday’s game with a season high 16 assists,  11 of which came in the first half. Brynlee Patterson and Aberee Ervin each had 6 assists with Patterson scoring 8 points while grabbing 5 rebounds. Ervin finished with 10 pts and 5 steals. Oaklei Davis capitalized off of the generous passing from her teammates and led all scorers with 14pts while collecting 3 assists and 4 rebounds of her own. Charlee Morris chipped in 6 pts and Brylie Tinsman 4pts to round out the scoring in a game where they held their opponent scoreless in the 2nd half.   The Bears will be busy next week as they have 2 road games and 1 at Home to finish out their regular season. 

The JV Bears lost to Eastern Hancock Friday night 53-48. The bears were down 9 points after the 1st quarter. They battled back in the second quarter to only be down 5 at halftime. In the 3rd quarter the bears turned up the defense and held Eastern Hancock to just 5 points in the 3rd quarter. The bears were down 1 point to start the 4th quarter. The bears just couldn’t get over the hump to get the lead. The Bears were led in scoring by Griffin Gannom with 17 points. 

Carter Wheatley added 13 points.

The boys varsity Bears lost a hard fought game to Eastern Hancock 41-33 Friday night. The bears were only down 1 after the 1st quarter. In the second quarter the Bears defense was solid but the offense just wasn’t there. The bears were down 22-15 at the half. In the 3rd quarter the Bears got down by 9 points early. They battled back to cut the deficit to 3 points. Eastern Hancock by the end of the quarter had the lead back to 8 points. The 4th quarter was played even and eventually lost by 8 points. The Bears were led in scoring by Easton Foster with 19 points 10 rebounds and 6 block shots Hayden Taylor added 9 points.

Monroe Central Archers competed Saturday against Randolph Southern and Winchester.   Top High School Male was Doug Lankford with 271.  Top Jr High Male was Lucas Holliday with 267!   The Archers are in action again this coming Saturday in the Monroe Central State Qualifier.   There will be 9 schools,  13 teams and just under 300 archers competing in this meet!! 

The Golden Bear Grapplers finished 4th in the team race, while missing 2 varsity wrestlers from the line-up. Individually we had 4 wrestlers make the finals, with one winning a MEC title.  While all 11 wrestlers placed top 6 in their weight classes. Capturing his 2nd MEC title Junior Jerimiah Ullom @190,  finishing in 2nd place were @120 Freshman Lane Whitehead, @138 Freshman Caden Shockney, and @150 Senior Zac Martin.  Finishing in 5th place @106 Freshman Maria Oliphant, @113 Senior Mak Brainerd, @165 Freshman Chelsea Erwin, and @175 Freshman Christian Erwin. In addition @126 Freshman Raegan Quattlebaum and @157 Freshman Tristan Epperhart finished in 6th place.  Your grappling Golden Bears are back on the mat next Saturday in the Delta Sectional. As always GO BEARS!!!!

The JV Bears beat the Bruins Saturday night 51-43.  The bears jumped out to a 11-4 lead after the 1st quarter. At halftime the Bears doubled up the Bruins the score was 26-13. In the 3rd quarter the bears and bruins played evenly. In the 4th quarter the bears made some turnovers.  The bruins scored off the turnovers made the game close but the bears pulled it out for the win.

The Bears were led in scoring by Carter Wheatley with 13, Josh Swearingen added 9 points and 11 rebounds, Braylon Anderson and Jackson Konkle added 7 points apiece.

The varsity bears lost a hard fought game against the Bruins Saturday night. After the 1st quarter the game was tied at 14. In the second quarter the Bears stretched the lead to 7 by halftime. After halftime the bears just couldn’t put together constitutive defense and scores on offense. The end of the 3rd quarter the Bears were down 3. In the 4th quarter the bears and the bruins played even basketball until the bears had to foul. The Bruins hit some free throws to seal the game. The Bears were led  by Easton Foster with 22 points and 12 rebounds , Josiah Cleveland added 15 points and Carter Duncan also added 11.
