This is Red Ribbon Week, a week dedicated to educating youth across the country on the dangers of substance abuse. Here are some statistics for you today to ponder:
1. 31% of 12th graders have not used any substances in their lifetime.
2. Youth who start drinking before age 15 are 7 times more likely to develop alcohol use disorders as adults than those who wait until after age 18.
3. Risky substance use and addiction is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and in most cases, it begins in the teen years.
4. 71% of 8th graders disapprove of people who smoke marijuana occasionally.
Middle School Scholastic Book Fair
When: Begins Monday, October 31st & Ends on Thursday, Nov. 3. (**You can still shop online Nov. 4th-Nov. 13th.)

Online Shopping: Mr. Retherford will be sending out the information for your parents to shop online! There are even more great selections!

The Book Fair Family Night will be Wednesday, November 2nd from 5:30-7pm in the library. There will be treats available as well as great books! See you there!
Halloween Dress-up Day
The Class of 2023 will be having a Halloween Dress-up day on Monday, October 31st. For a $1.00 donation, you can wear your Halloween costume to school. Please be sure costumes follow school guidelines.
Interested in dancing and performing to music? Do you need an expressive outlet? Want to learn to toss objects like flags, sabres, and rifles into the air and catch them effortlessly as people watch in amazement? Try Color Guard! Any 7-12 student interested in joining the Color Guard should attend an informational meeting Friday during the last Activity Period in the band room.
Whether writing lyrics to music or writing sonnets about nature, young people have important things to say. The Indiana Arts Commission seeks to celebrate young voices and youth poetry through its Poetry Ourselves program. Poetry Ourselves is a statewide original poetry competition for students in grades 9-12. Students have the option to submit either a written poem or a recording of a spoken-word poem. Poems will be judged by a panel of qualified professional poets, writers, and field experts. Cash prizes are available to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in both the written and spoken word categories. Contact Mrs. Braswell for more information on how to apply!

It’s Socktober! The Anchor Club is collecting donations of new socks for the Journey Home veterans shelter and the Parker City nursing home. Please bring any donations to the front office.
Attention Seniors – Ceiling Tile Art Project – One more opportunity – Tuesday, October 25 from 3:05-5:30 p.m. – If you are interested in painting a ceiling tile to represent your time here at MC, join us on Tuesday afternoon in the art room.
The MC Scholarship Fund will be hosting the annual Sadie Hawkins / Halloween Dance Saturday, October 29th. Admission will be $5 at the door. Crabtree Photography will also be available to take pictures. Pick up a picture order form in the front office or in Student Services.
