Daily Announcements 10/26/2022

This is Red Ribbon Week, a week dedicated to educating youth across the country on the dangers of substance abuse. Here are some statistics for you today to ponder:
63% of high school seniors disapprove of the regular use of marijuana.
More than 90,000 Americans died of an overdose in 2020. Addiction is more likely to start in the teen years that’s why delayed first-time use is so important.
Early initiation of drinking is associated with the development of an alcohol use disorder later in life.
After first trying cannabis or misusing prescription drugs, the percentages of young people who develop the corresponding substance use disorder are higher among adolescents (ages 12-17) than young adults (ages 18-25)

Whether writing lyrics to music or writing sonnets about nature, young people have important things to say. The Indiana Arts Commission seeks to celebrate young voices and youth poetry through its Poetry Ourselves program. Poetry Ourselves is a statewide original poetry competition for students in grades 9-12. Students have the option to submit either a written poem or a recording of a spoken-word poem. Poems will be judged by a panel of qualified professional poets, writers, and field experts. Cash prizes are available to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in both the written and spoken word categories. Contact Mrs. Braswell for more information on how to apply!
