This is Red Ribbon Week, a week dedicated to educating youth across the country on the dangers of substance abuse. Here are some statistics for you today to ponder:
Underage drinking contributes to the 3 leading causes of death (unintentional injury, homicide, and suicide) among persons aged 12-20.
Early-onset of regular marijuana use among adolescents is linked to a decline in IQ and is associated with educational dropout.
The DEA has reported that more than 4 in 10 pills are laced with fentanyl.
Teens who consistently learn about the risks of drugs from their parents are up to 50% less likely to use drugs than those who don’t.
Middle School Scholastic Book Fair
When: Begins Monday, October 31st & Ends on Thursday, Nov. 3. (**You can still shop online Nov. 4th-Nov. 13th.)

The Book Fair Family Night will be Wednesday, November 2nd from 5:30-7pm in the library. There will be treats available as well as great books! See you there!
The Class of 2023 will be having a Halloween Dress-up day on Monday, October 31st. For a $1.00 donation, you can wear your Halloween costume to school. Please be sure costumes follow school guidelines.
The MC Academy is sponsoring a Food Drive during the month of November and start of December with all food items being donated for Christmas food assistance thru the Rex Amburn Memorial Food Drive within the MC Community. This year’s annual food drive will be a COMPETITION between grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and the teachers.
–This year the teachers will have a box to contribute toward the competition.
–You need to bring in the listed item of the day to get a point for that day.
–For each food item you donate to your grade’s box your class will receive one (1) point.
–For each dollar you donate to your grade’s jar your class will receive one (1) point.
–If you donate an item that is not on the list for that day to another grade’s box they will lose a point.
–The class with the most points will win a prize for each student.

Interested in dancing and performing to music? Do you need an expressive outlet? Want to learn to toss objects like flags, sabres, and rifles into the air and catch them effortlessly as people watch in amazement? Try Color Guard! Any 7-12 student interested in joining the Color Guard should attend an informational meeting Friday during the last Activity Period in the band room.
Whether writing lyrics to music or writing sonnets about nature, young people have important things to say. The Indiana Arts Commission seeks to celebrate young voices and youth poetry through its Poetry Ourselves program. Poetry Ourselves is a statewide original poetry competition for students in grades 9-12. Students have the option to submit either a written poem or a recording of a spoken-word poem. Poems will be judged by a panel of qualified professional poets, writers, and field experts. Cash prizes are available to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in both the written and spoken word categories. Contact Mrs. Braswell for more information on how to apply!

It’s Socktober! The Anchor Club is collecting donations of new socks for the Journey Home veterans shelter and the Parker City nursing home. Please bring any donations to the front office.
The MC Scholarship Fund will be hosting the annual Sadie Hawkins / Halloween Dance Saturday, October 29th. Admission will be $5 at the door. Crabtree Photography will also be available to take pictures. Pick up a picture order form in the front office or in Student Services. For more information check out the signs around the school or see Mrs. Swift in Student Services.
We will have tutoring every Tuesday and Thursday night after school. Mrs. Van Pelt will tutor on Tuesdays and Mr. Hartle will tutor on Thursdays. Any questions, see Mrs. Swift in Student Services.
